India is
an idea dying for.. whether u are Hindu or
Muslim. An inhospitable graveyard at half
the height of Everest, that was Kargil. The
cream of a nation's youth reduced to a mass
of blood, scorched flesh... and memories of valor.
The story had to be told.
Before we forget... Kargil is not just a
cold, isolated place. It is now an
unforgettable landmark in our history. There
is a timeless lesson in the story; a
testament to the human spirit, the bravery
of our officers and our jawans. This film is
a tribute to their memories. A tribute to
the bravest of the brave. What is
astonishing and must be told, what is truly
heroic about our boys is that they fought
fairly. Yes, fairly. The enemy had already
breached the rules of peace. If our Army,
too, had crossed the L.O.C., they might have
finished the war in 7 days flat. Our boys
were angry, they were seething, but they
showed tremendous restraint. They did not
cross the L.O.C., no matter the provocation,
the agony, the frustration of seeing their
comrades dying around them. And so a 7-days
war took 80 days to finish, took so many
more lives than was actually necessary. |

MAIN, MERI
PATNI AUR WOH*
Rajpal Yadav, Rituparna Sengupta, Kay Kay Menon
Mithilesh
Shukla (Rajpal Yadav) is a bachelor. A
librarian with the University of Lucknow,
Mithilesh had successfully avoided marriage,
despite all the family pressure.
Unable to fight against an ''ideal
proposal'', an over emotional mother and his
lawyer uncle, he is forced to go to Bareli
and see a girl. Soon, Mithilesh meets Veena
(Rituparna Sengupta).
A few inches taller, naturally charming,
intelligent, naughty yet innocent, and last
but not the least, very beautiful, Veena
leaves Mithilesh speechless. Very rapidly,
he finds his feelings shifting from,
embarrassment of rejecting, to fear of
rejection.
Totally at sea with such emotions,
Mithilesh is further stunned when Veena
accepts the proposal and expresses her will
to marry him. Mithilesh helplessly succumbs
to this act of God, Cupid, Fate, and decides
to marry.
While on their journey to, ''...and they
lived happily ever after'', Mithilesh is
reminded of his ordinary looks and Veena's
stunning beauty, time and again. Most call
him ''Lucky'', for getting Veena as a wife,
while others appear eager to begin
interaction with her.
To regain his much valued peace of mind,
Mithilesh decides to take some action, with
detailed planning and Lord Shiva's
blessings, he very easily sorts out people
like, the cheeky vegetable vendor, the
talkative milkman, the over friendly friend,
Salim.
As Mithilesh starts to breath easy, Akash
(Kay Kay Menon) moves in the flat opposite
theirs. Veena and Akash are childhood
friends, meeting after years. Akash is a
tall dark and handsome Computer Hardware
Engineer from Delhi.
Despite all the plans and blessings, this
time Mithilesh is unable to avoid the, Veena-any
other man interaction. Factors like, Akash
and Veena's similar preferences, a lot of
catching up to do, Akash's boyish charm,
often make Mithilesh feel like the intruder.
Watching Veena and Akash together,
Mithilesh can't help but think about how
well suited, they are. In Akash's shadow he
realizes that Veena deserves better.
Restless and contemplating his next move,
Mithilesh is shattered when he finds out
that Veena feels the same.
Mithilesh's efforts to set things
''right'' and make everyone happy, forms the
end of this love story of an odd couple.

Indian cinema has taken us to many
exotic territories around the world. Anupam
P. Kher’s ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara’
based on Jahnu Barua’s unusual script
carries the audience to an unchartered
territory, where they have never truly
ventured before…the human brain.
The film structures the narrative by telling
a simple story of a man’s illness and his
daughter’s love, understanding and
commitment to find her father’s treatment,
overcoming a host of problems through her
faith and determination.
It is a film that connects two disparate
events together. One, of a small middle
class family in present day Mumbai
struggling to come to terms with the fact
that the head of the family is now suffering
from early dementia and two, the
assassination of the father of the nation,
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

MANGAL
PANDEY* (2 DVD SET)
Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji, Amisha Patel
Set against the backdrop of the Indian
Mutiny of 1857, 'The Rising' tells the tale
of a heroic sepoy Mangal Pandey (Aamir) who
saves the life of a British commanding
officer William Gordon (Toby Stephens) in a
fierce battle in the Afghan wars of the mid
19th century. Despite the difference in
their rank, Mangal and Gordon become good
friends.
Their friendship is tested with the arrival
of a charming and beautiful young
aristocrat, Emily Kent. In the meantime,
Gordon saves a beautiful young native girl,
Jwala (Amisha), from the funeral pyre of her
late husband, and falls in love with her.
Differences arise between Mangal Pandey and
Gordon when the controversial new gun
cartridges are introduced in the infantry of
which Mangal is a part. The new cartridges
require soldiers to bite through their
greased casing, made of animal fat. And the
Indian soldiers in the infantry refuse to
use them.
Gordon assures Pandey that the cartridges
have no animal fat, but the truth turns out
to be the opposite.
Mangal Pandey leads a mutiny against the
British, thereby setting off a wave for
Indias freedom from its imperialist
rulers.
The Rising was the opening film at the
Locarno Film Festival where it got a
standing ovation from the audience that
mainly constituted the French, Germans,
Italians and the Swiss.

MEENAXI*
- Tale of 3 Cities
An Art Film by M.F. Husain
Tabu, Raghuvir Yadav, Nadira Babbar and
Introducing Kunnal Kapoor
Nawab, (Raghuvir Yadav) a popular
novelist of Hyderabad, is suffering from the
classic case of writer's block. Five years
have elapsed. Stories of substance seem to
have dried up.
Almost providentially, Nawab comes across
Meenaxi (Tabu). The young woman is enigmatic
and individualistic. She's not quite willing
to perform the part of a passive muse.
Meenaxi assumes different personae. She can
be the mysterious perfume trader of
Hyderabad, the exotic desert bloom of
Jaisalmer and the orphaned Maria of Prague.
Inexorably, she consolidates her command
over the novelist. She dismisses his renewed
attempts at writing as insubstantial and
hackneyed, plunging him into a state of
deeper despair. She is scathingly critical
about his story and is amused by one of his
characters, the lovelorn and awkward
Kaameshwar (Kunnal Kapoor). |

YAAR KI SHAADI HAI*
UDAY CHOPRA, JIMMY
SHERGILL, SANJANA,
BIPASHA BASU
Love comes to people
in all sorts of
ways. To some with
the tenderness of
roses, to others
with a sparkle of a
smile. To Sanjay (Uday
Chopra), however,
love came hitting
like a ton of
bricks.
Ria (Bipasha Basu,
in a sp. app.), a
model, shares an
apartment with
Sanjay. Her romantic
liaison with Sanjay
lasted only for a
week, at the end of
which she dumped him
just to remain
friends. Sanjay is
the dithering
casanova, constantly
bungling up his
romantic liaisons.
Till one day the
phone rings. It's
his childhood friend
Anjali (Sanjana) and
she's getting
married. It is now
that the bricks fall
on him. Observing
Sanjay's reaction to
this news and
hearing him talk to
Anjali, Ria
concludes that
Sanjay is in love
with Anjali.
Sanjay wakes up to
this truth
reluctantly but
surely. But isn't it
too late, now that
Anjali is getting
married? Well,
Sanjay doesn't think
so! He sets off to
Dehradun on a
'noble' mission –
to break the
wedding!
In Dehradun, he is
reunited with the
lovely Anjali and is
simply overjoyed.
Till he meets the
groom to be –
Rohit (Jimmy
Shergill) – the
suave NRI from New
York (Rohit and
Anjali met and fell
in love in New York
itself).
Sanjay's hopes of
sabotaging the
wedding are
effectively crushed
on meeting the
handsome,
charismatic, every
girl's dream-boy
Rohit. Nevertheless,
Sanjay's love for
Anjali impels him to
take on the world
and he sets off on a
crusade of poisoning
the family's mind
against Rohit and
setting up traps for
Rohit to fall into.
Rohit soon realises
that Sanjay is
behind these
seemingly innocent
coincidences and
confronts him – a
clash between the
good and the not so
good. Both men
decide to give each
other a fair chance,
letting Anjali be
the final decision
maker.
Does Rohit's
integrity win over
Anjali or does
Sanjay's love emerge
triumphant?

For Sunil [Ranvir Shorey] and Malti [Konkana
Sen], it was not the case of 'seven year
itch'. It was the 'ten year itch'! Married
for a decade, they had everything that a
middle class family would have wanted in
their lives. An apartment of their own, good
jobs, a delightful kid, facilities and a
social life. What they had started missing
been the passion that brought the two
together in their initial years.
A
story about middle class couple in Mumbai,
'Mixed Doubles' is a Rajat Kapoor film. He
had earlier directed 'Raghu Romeo' and now
also acts in the movie opposite Koel Purie.
A funny take on marriage, romance and living
life 'differently', it is a movie which is
one of its kinds and also stars Saurabh
Shukla, Vinay Pathak and Naseeruddin Shah. |

MRS. IYER (English language with English

Rahul Bose, Konkona Sensharma, Esha Chuhan
MUMBAI, July 26 2003: Mr and Mrs Iyer joyously
swept four national awards this year,
vindicating one's faith in humanity in
general and the national awards jury in
particular. The film won awards for best
director and best screenplay for Aparna Sen,
best actress for Konkona Sen Sharma, and the
Nargis Dutt award for best film on national
integration
Mrs. Iyer is on the beginning of a long
journey to Calcutta to be with her husband.
The trip starts with a long bus ride and is
supposed to be followed by a train trip. But
there is a problem along the bus route as
Hindus and Muslim extremists are at each
others throats. The roads are closed and
there is a curfew put in place. Along side
her is Raja Chowdhary, taking the same
journey and since Mrs. Iyer has a small
child, helping her out when he can. While
trapped on the bus, a gang of Hindus boards
the bus in order to ferret out any Muslims.
They go so far as to make a boy strip so
they can check and see if he is circumcised.
Raja is Muslim, but Mrs. Iyer goes against
her beliefs and covers for him so nothing
will happen to him. Mrs. Iyer was brought up
believing that Muslims were inferior and she
should have nothing to do with them. But
along the journey she comes to realize that
it's not your religion that defines you, but
who you are as a person

MUGHAL-E-AZAM
(1960 Classic - Now released in Color)
Prithviraj,Dilip
Kumar,Murad,Ajit ,Madhumala,Nigar Sultana,Durgha Khote
MUGHAL-E-AZAM is a page
from the golden history of the land of
Jalaluddin Mohammed Akbar.
The Great Akbar has
everything an emperor can ask for: immense
wealth, vast empire,
trusted lieutenants. However, he only wants
the one thing a man can ask for: a child, a
son, an heir. Therefore, he prays to the
gods, embarking on a grand journey to this
end. His wish is fulfilled and his wife,
Rani Jodhabai, gives birth to a boy Akbar
knows no joy and lavishes all his affection
on him. However, as the boy grows, Akbar
sees that his affection is perhaps spoiling
him. Thus, he sends him away: to make him a
warrior, to make him a 'man'. The boy soon
grows into a strapping man, Prince Salim.
Jodhabai unable to be away from her progeny
wishes her son to return. And Salim does so.
Much to everyone's joy.
And this is where the real
story begins. At the unveiling of a statue
to welcome his return, Salim is taken by its
sheer beauty. And why not? For it proves to
be a real person, the lovely courtesan,
Anarkali. Follows a charming exchange of
romantic letters, cumulating in, yes,
the two professing their love for each
other. And , as you can guess, this is where
the problem begins. A prince and a
courtesan? Much like Beauty and the Beast.

Adding to the mayhem are Rani's strict
army-officer father (Amrish Puri), Samir's
best friend and astrologer (Rajpal Yadav)
and resident snoozer (Satish Shah).
On the whole, MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI is an apt
example of escapist cinema that transports
you to a world of make-believe. Rich in
face-value with light moments aplenty, the
film has all it takes to woo the masses. At
the box-office, the film will take a
historic start, setting new box-office
records in days to come.

Munnabhai [Sanjay Dutt] lives with his
gang in the bylanes of a dhobi ghat in
Mumbai, takes pride in being a 'social
worker' [they actually settle 'financial
disputes' through dadagiri] and enjoys his
booze, babes, brawls…
Munna's father, Hari Prasad Sharma [Sunil
Dutt], an upright, moralistic man, believes
that his son is actually a doctor running a
charity hospital. Every year, when his
parents arrive, Munna and his gang bathe,
shave, don white coats and stethoscopes and
pretend to be diligent doctors.
But the clever charade falls apart. Hari
Prasad Sharma runs into an old friend, Dr.
Asthana [Boman Irani], who has a daughter
called Suman [Gracy Singh]. The two decide
that their children, both doctors, would
make a perfect match. Munna tries hard to
save the situation, but his father discovers
the truth. And all hell breaks loose.
Hari Prasad Sharma, now broken by the truth,
removes his white spotless pagdi and cries.
Munnabhai then takes a decision that would
change many lives – he decides to become a
doctor
